Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with a large number of people affected, especially in the northern regions. Kauru Local Government Area in Kaduna State, like many other areas in Nigeria, faces the burden of high prevalence rates of SCD, with many individuals and families unaware of the genetic factors, prevention methods, and treatment options available. In this context, radio has become an important medium for spreading health information, particularly in rural areas where literacy rates may be lower, and access to healthcare services is limited (Aminu & Yusuf, 2023). Radio programs in local languages can reach a broad audience and provide essential information about the prevention, diagnosis, and management of sickle cell disease. This study aims to assess the role of radio in raising awareness about sickle cell disease in Kauru, focusing on how radio programs contribute to improving knowledge and attitudes about the disease in this community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Sickle cell disease continues to be under-diagnosed and poorly understood in many parts of Nigeria, including Kauru. Despite the availability of preventive measures, such as genetic counseling and blood tests, the lack of awareness and cultural misconceptions about SCD persist. Radio, with its wide reach and accessibility, has been identified as an effective tool for disseminating health information, yet the extent to which radio has contributed to raising awareness about sickle cell disease in Kauru has not been thoroughly explored. This study seeks to examine how radio programs in Kauru have addressed the issue of sickle cell disease and whether they have led to an increase in public knowledge, prevention efforts, and acceptance of treatment options.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is important for understanding the role of radio in public health education, particularly in rural settings where other forms of communication may be less effective. By evaluating the effectiveness of radio in raising awareness about sickle cell disease, the findings will inform the development of future health communication strategies. Moreover, the study will provide evidence that can be used by healthcare providers, NGOs, and government agencies to improve sickle cell disease awareness programs in Kauru and similar communities.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is focused on Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, and specifically on the role of radio in raising awareness about sickle cell disease. Limitations include potential biases in survey responses and challenges in obtaining data from respondents who may not regularly listen to the radio.
